Bring the Greenery Indoors

Mason jar lanterns, living walls and miniature gardening are all top garden design ideas this year, but if you want to bring more greenery and spring brights into your home then this is one trend you will want to try.
String gardens can transform your plants into brilliant art displays for kitchens and sunrooms, or can be suspended in lounges to literally create a 'living room'.

Take inspiration from the Japanese garden trend Kokedama to create your own!

  1. To get started you need to select a few plants. Choose greenery and flowers such as ferns, grass, begonias and orchids, as these will thrive in the indoor environment, provided that they have a little sunshine each day to bask in.
  2. First, soak a bowlful of Sphagnum moss in water and leave to sit. Turn your attentions to your plants and remove as much soil as you can, exposing the roots. Take care to be gentle to ensure you don't damage them. Briefly dip the plants into room-temperature water and set aside.
  3. Pick out your soaked moss - about enough to wrap around your roots - and squeeze out the water. Pull the moss around the roots and secure together with cotton string.
  4. Have a 7:3 ratio of peat moss and akedama soil at the ready, and mix together, adding water when needed to create a clay-like consistency.
  5. Pull on your gloves and proceed to shape this mixture into an orange-sized ball or larger grapefruit for bigger plants. Make sure your ball has enough room for the roots of your plant.
  6. Once you've firmed up your ball, make a slight hole or split and enter your plant inside. Then reshape the ball around the plant.
  7. Finally use sheet moss to cover your plants and secure this with string and twine. Find a place to hang your new string garden and you're ready to go!
